About Seamens Enterprises: Seamens Enterprises is one of Pakistan's earliest adopters of German chemical technology โ using imported German raw materials to formulate its own range of organic-based industrial chemical solutions since 1997.
An optical brightening agent absorbs invisible UV light and re-emits it as visible blue light, cancelling the natural yellowish tint of cotton so fabric appears whiter than its actual base colour โ it's an optical effect, not a bleaching action. Getting the dose right matters: overdosed OBA gives a dull, slightly greenish cast instead of the brighter white a mill is aiming for.
What Is an Optical Brightening Agent?
An OBA is a fluorescent chemical that absorbs invisible ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible blue light, which cancels out the naturally yellow undertone in cotton and other cellulosic fibre and makes the fabric look whiter and brighter than its true base colour. It works entirely by manipulating light โ the fibre isn't chemically whitened, it just reflects a corrected colour back to the eye.
Why Does White Fabric Turn Yellow Over Time?
White fabric yellows with age mainly from oxidation of residual natural pigments left after bleaching, UV exposure over repeated sun-drying, and the gradual loss of OBA effect through washing. Incomplete bleaching at the finishing stage compounds the problem by leaving more base yellow tint that the OBA then has to work harder to mask from the start.
How Much OBA Should Be Used?
| Application Method | Typical Dose | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Exhaust (jigger/beam) | 0.3โ0.8 g/L | Lower dose sufficient given longer contact time |
| Pad application | 0.8โ1.5 g/L | Shorter contact time needs higher concentration |
Overdosing warning: Pushing OBA above the recommended range does not give more whiteness โ it causes a visible greenish or dull cast that mills usually mistake for a dyeing fault rather than an OBA overdose.
Does OBA Wash Out?
Yes โ OBA effect fades gradually through repeated washing and UV exposure, which is exactly why detergent manufacturers add their own OBA to washing powder to top up brightness on white garments over the product's life. On well-fixed mill-applied OBA, visible effect typically holds through the first 5โ8 home wash cycles before noticeable fading begins.
- Fix at correct pH โ most cotton OBAs perform best near neutral to slightly alkaline conditions
- Avoid chlorine bleach afterward โ chlorine degrades most OBA classes and reverses the brightening effect
- Store finished goods away from direct sun โ prolonged UV exposure accelerates OBA fade before the garment even reaches the customer
